The Port of Livorno is one of the largest Italian seaports and one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean, with an annual capacity of about 30 million tons of goods.

It is also an important business center, with more than 15,000 employees providing services to more than 7,000 ships every year.

Livorno is also considered a major route along the corridor of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the port is able to handle all types of vessels. The port of Livorno serves primarily the Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria and the Marche.

The port is also nice from an aesthetic point of view thanks to the presence of the Medici fortress, also called Old Fortress, from where a beautiful sunset can be seen. The Port of Livorno is divided into Porto Vecchio (Old Port) and Porto Nuovo (New Port) and consists of four major basins.

The first one is called Avamporto, a large area outside the port bounded on the south by the Diga della Vegliaia (Vegliaia Dam), on the west by the Diga curvilinea (curved Dam) and on the east by the Molo Mediceo (Medici harbor), which also includes the New Dry Dock and the Morosini harbor.

Then there is the Old Port, located at the southern part of the port, which and includes 5 zones called Porto Mediceo, Vecchia Darsena, Nuova Darsena, Bacino Cappellini and Bacino Firenze.

Then, the Santo Stefano area is bounded to the north by the Marzocco Dam, to the west by the Dam of Meloria, built in 1900 as a straight-line, 550 meters-long extension of the Curvilinear dam, the Alto Fondale, the Darsena Petroli, the Darsena dei Calafati and the first part of the waterway leading to the industrial port.

The fourth area is called the New Port, located at the north of the port, and corresponds to the industrial port area. It includes some zones called Darsena Toscana, Darsena Inghirami, Darsena Ugione, Canale industriale and Canale dei Navicelli. The Old Port is composed of the Old Dock and the Port Mediceo but also of the New Dock.

Around the port area there are also many lighthouses like the famous Fanale dei Pisani, built on a rock that emerges surrounded by the sea, at the southern entrance of the port.

Visitors that reach the Port of Livorno may choose to take part to a shore excursion to Florence, like the one provided by Guided Florence Tours, in order to visit one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
