From PlanetEye Traveler:
Unlike Mumbai, New Delhi is known to have auto rickshaw drivers who’ll charge excessive fees. This is especially true if you are not a resident of Delhi or if you are a foreigner. The Delhi Government has rules and regulations that none of the auto drivers actually follow, well that is if you don’t make them! By law, auto drivers are supposed to go by the fare meter. The chargers are Rs. 10 for the first kilometer and then Rs. 3.50 for every extra kilometer.

More from my article on Santorini, about the Mykonos windmills that feature prominently in many photographs. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out how these would work, until I read this pdf by Keith Vaughan:
A major disappointment of this adventure was the lack of sails on the masts of the windmills. I had seen spectacular pictures of the Mykonos windmills in guidebooks with full, billowing white sails, and these images are still available on postcards. Perhaps it was something to do with the out of season time (my visit was in May), but I did hear statements from one hotel owner in Mykonos town that “we don’t do that anymore.”

Santorini, Greece

My new post on PlanetEye Traveler is a visual tour of the beautiful Santorini.
The volcanic eruption of Thera in Santorini was a defining event in Greek history and has been speculatively suggested as an explanation for biblical plagues against Egypt, as well as the sinking of Atlantis. The archipelago was left in its current shape, resembling a volcanic cone with the top blown off, and the impressively steep cliffs encouraged the construction of the vertically stacked villages that now make the area such a popular tourist destination.

‘Before Sunset’ tour of Paris: Quai de la Tournelle
Jesse: Let’s get on that boat! Come on!
Céline: You don’t have time! We gotta go.
Jesse: It’s just about to take off. Look, I’ve got… I’ve got…15 more minutes…
Céline: OK, you know I’ve never been on these boats, it’s for tourists, it’s embarrassing!

‘Before Sunset’ tour of Paris: Shakespeare and Company
“Jesse: I mean, I always think of Thomas Wolfe, you know, if you ever seen that little one page note to reader in the front of “Look Homeward, Angel”, you know what I’m talking about? Anyway, he says that we are the sum of all the moments of our lives, and that anybody who sits down to write is gonna use the clay of their own mind, that you can’t avoid that.”

‘Before Sunset’ tour of Paris: Notre Dame
“Jesse: I heard this story once, about when the…the Germans were occupying Paris and they had to retreat back, they wired Notre Dame to blow. But they had to…they had to leave one guy in charge of hitting the switch and the guy, the soldier, he…he couldn’t do it. You know, he just sat there, knocked out by how beautiful the place was.”
Before Sunset is one of my favourite movies, so for this PlanetEye Traveler post I compiled a virtual tour of the movie locations, complete with photos, quotes and a map!

4 Movie Locations in Real World: Hobbiton
Another location from my Traveler post:
Once the Lord of The Rings crew wrapped up their last shot and moved out of New Zealand, they left behind a bourgeoning tourism industry built around the iconic movie locations. Hobbiton was one of the most recognizable sets in the film and the are still 17 (out of original 37) hobbit holes left in their natural state.

4 Movie Locations in Real World: Platform 9 ¾
My new PlanetEye Traveler post highlights tourist destinations borne out of the iconic locations of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Ghostbusters and Amelie.
Located in the Kings Cross Station, this installation references the secret train platform that the kids from Harry Potter used to get to Hogwarts.
In reality, Rowling got her train stations confused, as there is no platform between tracks 9 & 10 in Kings Cross. In the movies, the producers just renumbered the tracks 4 & 5, while in this real life photo-op, they glued a piece of a shopping cart to the wall.
