Urban Fictions by Richard Rowland
“Urban Fictions is a photographic and video project funded by Arts Council England, examining the emergence of simulated urban developments in eastern China.
These idealised reconstructions appear as hyperreal utopias that seek to create rather than reflect historical reality; illusory spaces connecting to the broader national narrative of modern-day China – one of consumerism, spectacle and economic expansion.”
From lauraallover:
I left BSB this morning for the western half of Malaysian Borneo, Sarawak. I’m staying in a city called Miri, which is just across the Bruneian border. It’s super Chinese here, and it feels a lot like Singapore. Tomorrow night I will take a 13-hour bus to the western end of the island to Kuching, where I’ll stay for a few nights and finally see some animals and stuff. Woo woo!
Things I noticed/experienced in Bandar Seri Begawan:
- They love Linkin Park. I saw a poster at a music store and didn’t think much of it, but then heard their songs everywhere. Only about ten years late…
- The people don’t bug you like they do in other SE Asian countries. They are much more likely to ignore you, and if anything, they will say “hello”.
- It reminded me of Myanmar because everyone speaks English. BUT, like in Myanmar, they seem to have learned it from non-native speakers, so their accents are really strong and difficult to understand.
- Dairy Queen
- When I was in the little internet cafe by my hostel, a ton of elementary-middle school boys came in and were playing computer games. It was hilarious because they were all speaking in English to each other and to the game. “OWNING!” “Get lost!”
- Yummy food, just like the rest of Borneo.

This is some Avatar-level shit. I’m thinking of maybe going to China in autumn, so this is definitely on the list now.
A Jungle Inside a Cave by Carsten Peter
I want to post all of these cave photos!! That’s some intense Minecraft-level shit right there…
A roof collapse long ago in Hang Son Doong let in light; plants thickly followed. As “Sweeny” Sewell climbs to the surface, hikers struggle through the wryly named Garden of Edam.

Conquering an Infinite Cave by Carsten Peter
A half-mile block of 40-story buildings could fit inside this lit stretch of Hang Son Doong, which may be the world’s biggest subterranean passage.
